What documentation does my pet need to travel?

The UK is now classified as a Part 2 listed third country under the EU Pet Travel Scheme, previous rules no longer apply. Here’s what pet owners need to know for a smooth journey.

EU Pet Passports Issued in Great Britain Are No Longer Valid

EU Pet Passports issued in Great Britain before 1st January 2021 are no longer valid for travel to the EU. However, these passports can still be used for re-entry to the UK, provided they were issued before the deadline and contain all required information under the Pet Travel Scheme (PETS).

Traveling to the EU: The Animal Health Certificate (AHC)

If you live in the UK and plan to travel to the EU with your pet, you will need an Animal Health Certificate (AHC) instead of the previously accepted EU Pet Passport (unless your Pet Passport has been issued by an EU veterinarian). Here’s what you need to know about the AHC:

  • Issued by an Official Veterinarian (OV): The AHC must be obtained from an "official veterinarian" in the UK.
  • Valid for 10 Days: It can be issued up to 10 days before your departure to the EU.
  • Valid for Re-entry: The certificate can be used for re-entry to the UK within 4 months from the date of issue.
  • New Certificate for Each Trip: You will need a new AHC for every trip to the EU.

This process may require planning, so it’s important to schedule a visit with an official veterinarian well in advance of your travel date.

Long-Term Stays in the EU: Obtaining an EU Pet Passport

If you plan to stay in the EU for longer than 4 months, the Animal Health Certificate will no longer be valid. Instead, you will need to:

  1. Apply for an EU Pet Passport: You can get this from an authorised veterinarian in the EU.
  2. Ensure Compliance with EU Requirements: The EU Pet Passport must include up-to-date information about your pet’s microchip, rabies vaccination, and any other necessary treatments.

EU Residents: Getting an EU Pet Passport

If you reside in the EU, the process is simpler. You can obtain an EU Pet Passport directly from an authorised veterinarian. This document should include:

  • Microchip details
  • Rabies vaccination certificate
  • Any additional required treatments

Tips for Hassle-Free Travel

  • Plan Ahead: Since an Animal Health Certificate must be issued close to your departure date, make sure to schedule your vet visit early.
  • Check Documentation Thoroughly: Double-check all information in your pet’s documentation, including microchip details and vaccination records.
  • Use a Pet Travel Checklist: Visit our Pet Travel Scheme Checklist to ensure you have everything you need before you leave.
